What is a pension?

Your pension is your income for later. Your income after retirement can consist of 3 parts:

  1. State retirement pension (AOW) – a benefit from the government.
  2. The pension you build up through your employers (Shell and any previous employers).
  3. The pension you arrange yourself, for example through an annuity or savings.

1. State retirement pension (AOW)

AOW stands for Algemene Ouderdomswet, the Dutch State Pension. The age at which you receive AOW depends on your date of birth, as the AOW age is gradually increasing. If you have not always lived in the Netherlands, your AOW will be lower than for someone who has.

For an estimate of your AOW age and the amount you have accrued, visit SVB.nl(opens in new window). You will also find information there about voluntary AOW contributions if you live or work abroad.

2. The pension you accrue through your employers

If you work at Shell, you accrue pension in 1 or more of our schemes::

  • Started working for Shell before 1 July 2013? Your pension is managed by  SSPF (Stichting Shell Pensioenfonds). For more details, see the SSPF Pension Scheme(opens in new window).
  • Started working for Shell on or after 1 July 2013? Your pension is managed by SNPS (Shell Nederland Pensioenfonds Stichting). For more details, see the SNPS Pension Scheme.
  • In the Shell Net Pension Scheme, you accrue a pension on your salary above the statutory tax limit, which is € 123,886 for both SSPF and SNPS. For more details, see the Shell Net Pension Scheme(opens in new window).

3. The pension you arrange yourself

You can supplement your employer pension and AOW yourself, for example with savings or an insurance product such as an annuity. Whether you need this depends on your personal situation and wishes. A financial adviser can help you make the right choices.
