Incapacity for work

Do you have an incapacity for work? Then Shell will, firstly, continue to pay the salary and pension contributions applicable before your incapacity for work. Your pension accrual will continue. Often, you will leave the employment of Shell partially or in full after 2 years. What happens if you then start to receive a benefit? Then there will be consequences for your pension accrual. Read more about this on this page.

Waiver of contribution if you leave the employment of Shell due to incapacity for work

What happens if you leave the employment of Shell and start to receive a WIA benefit? (WIA: Wet werk en inkomen naar arbeidsvermogen or Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act. If you are abroad, we only look at the percentage of your incapacity for work. We will pay the mandatory contribution (contribution):

  • We will pay the 21% contribution, Shell’s contribution.
  • We will pay the 2% contribution, your fixed contribution.
  • We will pay the risk contribution for the insurance of the pensions for your partner and children.

This applies if you are a participant in our pension scheme (with SNPS) on your first day of illness.

Good to know: your standard employee’s contribution is 7%; 2% of this is mandatory. So, we will not pay the flexible part above the mandatory 2% if you have an incapacity for work.

The contribution we pay depends on the percentage of your incapacity for work

The UWV determines the percentage of your incapacity for work. Are you working abroad? Then an independent doctor and occupational consultant will determine your incapacity for work. They will observe the WIA guidelines when doing this.

The waiver of contribution percentage applicable follows below. For example less than 35%, you are not entitled to a waiver of contribution.

How does the waiver of contribution affect the accrual of capital for your pension?

The following will continue to apply as long as you continue to be entitled to a waiver of contribution:

  1. You will continue to be a participant in the scheme.
  2. You will accrue pension capital on the percentage of your incapacity for work on a non-contributory basis. Are you still working for a number of hours? Then you will continue to accrue capital for your pension on these hours as you would have done before your incapacity for work.

The contribution we pay depends on the percentage of your incapacity for work

In the event of incapacity for work, SNPS continues to pay part of the pension premium on your behalf. The exact percentage depends on your established incapacity for work percentage. Below you can see how this is calculated.

You may receive a WIA benefit (a benefit under the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (Wet werk en inkomen naar arbeidsvermogen)) from the government. WIA is the acronym for the Dutch Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (Wet werk en inkomen naar arbeidsvermogen). The UWV will determine your degree of incapacity for work.

Yes, notify us via the contact page. We often receive information from the UWV. However, this does not happen if you are working abroad, for example. We need to receive information from you in this situation. Ask us what applies to your situation and what you will need to submit.

Or do Dutch social insurance schemes like the WIA not apply to you? Then an independent doctor and occupational consultant will determine your incapacity for work. They will observe the WIA guidelines when doing this.
