Taking leave

The pension you receive depends on your salary. Are you planning to take leave? For example, extended post-birth leave or a sabbatical? Then your salary will usually be lower and you will accrue less pension.

Think about whether you want to change your flexible contribution before or after your leave

Shell will pay a contribution equal to 21% of your salary. Your employee’s contribution will be added to your flexible contribution: your fixed contribution is 2% and your flexible contribution is 5% by default. You choose whether to increase or reduce this flexible contribution: from a minimum of 0% to a maximum of 7%. You will not accrue pension on the hours for which you take leave. In this situation, you could choose to increase your flexible contribution before or after your leave.

You can change your flexible contribution at any time via Shell’s Workday(opens in new window) system (view the manual (pdf)(opens in new window)). Your fixed contribution will continue to be 2%. If you do not do anything, your flexible contribution will continue to be 5%. Would you like to know how a different flexible contribution would affect your pension? Or what the impact is on your gross income? Then use the calculation tool. You cannot change your contribution in my‑Shell pension.

Check the other consequences

the pension for any partner and children you have will not change when you take leave. But these insurances will stop after 18 months.

If you take leave because of the birth of your child, you will sometimes be entitled to a benefit. Are you receiving a benefit? Then you will not be paid a salary and you will not accrue any pension. If you have no salary, or less salary, there may be other consequences too, e.g for your supplements. Discuss this with HR or a financial adviser.

Do you start to have an incapacity for work while you are on unpaid leave?

And do you become entitled to waiver of contribution as a result? Then we will base this on your salary before you took leave. And how many hours you were working before you took leave. Read more about the waiver of contribution on the page about incapacity for work.
